The very earliest ancestors of today’s dogs evolved about 200 million years ago from reptiles. Now there are many different breeds, ranging from Chihuahua to Great Dane, Poodle to English Bulldog, all with different characteristics and features and in many shapes and sizes. In spite of their own idiosyncrasies all these various types of dog are genetically as one, this is because dogs are all of the same species. So far as the relationship with us is concerned, there is much evidence to indicate that wolves were developing into man’s best friend at least 12,000 years ago.
