Origin
Most gerbils originated from Mongolia where the hardy little creatures survived in desert conditions. They also inhabited parts of Africa, India and the Middle East. They are also known as ‘Jird’ – an Arabic term that translates as ‘large desert rodent’.

Coat
Gerbils have a dense coat that’s soft, sleek and smooth.
Characteristics
Generally speaking gerbils make good pets. While they have been known to bite, this is not a common problem. They enjoy toys and like lots of attention.
Colour
The underside of a gerbil tends to be a pale, sometime grey hue with the upside of the body being brown and the ends of the hair are tinged with black.
